Martin Coulson is based at Mercer & Hole’s Rickmansworth office, where he looks after a varied portfolio of clients which includes individuals, limited companies, sole traders, partnerships, and Trusts.

Martin helps a range of people, from wealthy individuals, retirees, entertainers, property investors, and consultants, to those working in the construction, retail, and IT sectors. He manages all aspects of tax, from planning and structuring to advising on a variety of transactions.

His key motivation is, ultimately, that he likes to help people. Martin appreciates that tax can be quite daunting for many, and he likes to be able to take away the burden of it from his clients. As such, his aim is always to be a reliable source for clients – whether it’s for tax or business advice, or referrals to other trusted professionals.

Martin is his clients’ first port of call, and they know they can contact him with any queries they may have, and he will not only provide sound advice, but will also make issues easy to understand. He ensures that he is available to his clients in person and on the phone, whatever their preferred method of communication.

For Martin, the best part of his job is getting to know his clients. Martin gets to know them as people – what makes them tick, what’s most important to them, what their values are, and what they are looking to achieve in the short and long-term.

His approach to client relationships as being grounded in authenticity and appreciation of clients as people. It is the high importance in which Martin holds these relationships and connections that has seen him continue to work with many of the same clients since he began his career.

Martin joined Mercer & Hole in 2016, as a result of a merger with Day, Smith & Hunter (DSH). He joined DSH in 2009 as a trainee and qualified as a Chartered Tax Adviser in 2015, he was promoted to Director in 2023 and then to Partner in October 2024.

Martin is married with three young children. Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with family, and regularly plays golf. He is also a keen footballer and coaches an under-7s team in his spare time which he loves. In addition, he is a Governor at his local primary school.
