Mercer & Hole partners attend INSOL Europe Annual Congress 2018
Mercer & Hole Corporate Advisory partners Chris Laughton and Henry Page attended the INSOL Europe Annual Congress 2018 in Athens from 4-7 October.
With a theme of “Breaking the Chains”, representing the emergence of the Greek nation (and distressed businesses) from financial crisis, the congress brought together some 430 restructuring professionals from almost 40 countries. It was a perfect opportunity for Chris and Henry to share ideas and develop professional relationships with other leading European experts.
Delegates from outside the UK were keen to hear how cross-border insolvency would work on the UK becoming a “third country”. Andrew Shore of the UK Government’s Insolvency Service was interviewed by Simeon Gilchrist of Edwin Coe on the topic of ‘Brexit: Are you ready?’
During the presentation, @ChrisLaughton01 tweeted “At the INSOL Europe Congress in Athens, hearing Andrew Shore of the Insolvency Service say the UK’s preferred arrangement on Brexit is for the European Insolvency Regulation to continue to apply to the UK. The fallback for cooperation on a “no deal” Brexit will be the Model Law.”
Other formal conference topics ranged from cybercurrencies to covert surveillance, but an important part of the conference was meeting other European restructuring professionals. Having local contacts in cross-border restructuring and insolvency situations is imperative. On behalf of Mercer & Hole, Chris and Henry hosted a dinner near the Acropolis for old and new friends of the firm.
Next year, Chris and Henry plan to attend the INSOL Europe Annual Congress 2019 in Copenhagen, to ensure that Mercer & Hole can continue to deliver European cross-border restructuring solutions.
