Charmain Alway is an Associate Director specialising in private client tax and trusts. She originally joined Mercer & Hole in October 2008 and, following a period away from the firm, re-joined in February 2026, bringing with her extensive experience and a deep understanding of client needs.
Charmain qualified as a Chartered Tax Adviser in 2004 and has over 20 years’ experience of working in private practice. She advises individuals, trustees and executors on UK income tax, capital gains tax, and inheritance tax, and has significant experience supporting clients with tax compliance, including self-assessment and inheritance tax filings.
In addition, Charmain has hands‑on practical experience of administering deceased persons’ estates, including Will trusts, the preparation of trust and complex estate accounts, and overseeing the winding‑up process.
Charmain particularly enjoys estate planning and how tax interacts with finances, cash flow and strategy. Clear communication and a joined‑up approach are central to her client service philosophy.
Charmain works closely with our Private Client Partners, Helen Price, Jo Bateson, and Lynsey Lord, alongside Mercer & Hole’s Private Client and Trust teams.
Outside of work, Charmain enjoys spending time with her family, getting fresh air and exercise, and pursuing her creative interests, including sewing and gardening.
