Mercer & Hole V Tollers - Summer Cricket Match

As Ashes fever gripped the country, Mercer & Hole set out to replicate their cricketing heroes as they squared up against the cricketing powerhouse of Tollers Solicitors.

Mercer & Hole took to the crease first with visions of hitting fours and sixes freely, however Tollers had other ideas and some good bowling kept the run rate at a minimum despite the speed shown between the wickets of Alex Guntert.

Mercer & Hole wickets started to fall, but then came the middle order big hitters; Peter Godfrey-Evans, Chris Geaney, Daniel McCloskey and Jack Reyland. They kept their nerve under the incessant sledging and were hitting boundaries for fun. The run rate increased as we neared our 20 over limit, and we finished on a respectable but hard to defend, 102 runs.

It was then the turn of Tollers to step up to the crease, their opening batsman played our opening bowlers well and they looked on course for an easy win. However, Mercer & Hole were not ready to give up, we decided to send up our superstar bowlers, Chris Dennell and Mark Godfrey-Evans. As they marked out their run-ups you could see the fear in the batsman’s eyes. Their 100mph(ish) arrow-like bowling pinned Tollers back and wore them down, they were on their last legs as the next set of bowlers took up arms. A devastating period of bowling from Gary Farnes, Simon Emery, and Jack Reyland saw us rattle through the middle order of Tollers. However, would we come to rue some unnecessary byes by the end of the game?

It all built up to a nerve racking final couple of overs, and as the Mercer & Hole fielders put pressure on the batsmen, Tollers broke through our line of defence and hit one final boundary to seal their win.

The Mercer & Hole team limped off the field at the end knowing they had risked life and limb, but just came up short.

A good time was had by all and we all enjoyed some food and beers after the match.

Well done to Tollers! And we look forward to the next meeting….
