Last week Mercer & Hole continued their impressive start to the 2012 cricket season with a victory over Tollers solictors. The match was played at Corby Cricket Ground, where despite the threat of rain the sun continued to shine from the first ball to the last.
The two teams played a 20 innings game and Mercer & Hole were put in the field as the opposition chose to bat. Jack Reyland opened the bowling and started a trend of decent bowling which continued throughout the innings. Most impressive of all was Daniel McCloskey's two wickets from two overs. As a whole the team managed to restrict the opposition to 106 runs a strong but beatable total.
The team were then sent out to chase the total, openers Peter Godfrey-Evans and Michael Rogers went out to bat with Peter scoring 20 before being caught out after a slow start. At the half-way stage they were 51-2 meaning with ten overs left they required 56 runs to win. Up until this point not a single boundry had been scored by the batting side and this trend continued late into the game. Things got worse in the 16th over as the opposition bowler bowled a hatrick - an impressive feat by anyone's standards. However in the last over with the team requiring 13 runs to win the game, Ed Thompson changed the course of the match as he hit two fours, one of these coming of the last ball meaning the Mercer & Hole won the game by one wicket. The tense finish from the last ball was a great way to end what was an enjoyable match for all.
Finally a thank you to our hosts Tollers solicitors and Corby Cricket Club who provided us with a great evenings worth of entertainment and food and drink.
