Mercer & Hole get their 2012 cricket campaign off to a winning start!

Last night Mercer & Hole got their 2012 cricket campaign off to a fantastic start winning both of their 7-a-side matches.

The games were played at Hertingfordbury Cricket Club and all those in attendance will agree that we were exceptionally fortunate with perfect weather!

The first match was against James Taylor Construction and the team were sent out to bowl to start things off. With the matches being only 6 overs long, each player (except the wicket keeper) was required to bowl one over. The team bowled well keeping their opponents to 37 from their 6 overs. Opening batsmen Peter Godfrey-Evans and Alberto Di Lorenzo were sent out to set about the chase. The former was quick to reach 20 not out with some impressive boundaries and was forced to retire. With some useful contributions from Simon Coggins and Gary Farnes, the rest of the team successfully chased down the total, although rather anti-climactically the winning runs were obtained with an over to spare with a call of ‘wide!’ from the umpire.

Longmores solicitors, our hosts for the games, also defeated James Taylor Construction and so the scene was set for a thrilling final. Longmores won the toss and sent us out to bat first. This time it was the dynamic duo of Simon Coggins and Gary Farnes to open. After some quick boundaries from Simon and some nimble running between the wickets from the pair, Simon retired first leaving Gary to push on, and with steady one run knocks was eventually forced to retire after hitting an unbeaten 18 not out. Garry Picker was unable to run due to an earlier knee injury, but soldiered on hitting some very valuable runs at the death taking the final target to 61. It was then Longmores turn with the bat and their big hitters wasted no time in getting them off to a flyer with 30 scored from the first 2 overs showing little sign of slowing. However some tight bowling in the middle overs from Jack Reyland and Ed Thompson and some useful wickets from Alberto di Lorenzo and Gary Farnes left the hosts still needing 12 from the final over. It went right to the wire with a boundary needed from the final delivery but the team managed to hold on, winning in the end by 3 runs.

Finally, a big thank you to our hosts Longmores for a great evening of cricket, food and refreshments and a thank you to those who made the trip down to support us.
