As the Olympic Games Paris 2024 starts today, we have taken a moment to reflect on Mercer & Hole’s Beyond Boundaries campaign which launched in the spring of this year. Its purpose to encourage our team to push the limits of their capabilities, either mentally or physically, supporting our strong commitment to inclusion, resilience, and the courage to embrace new challenges.

“At Mercer & Hole, we believe in the power of mindset and pushing ourselves beyond what we thought we could achieve,” said Paul Maberly, Managing Partner at Mercer & Hole.

With the Olympics in mind, we were privileged to hear Derek Redmond speak when he visited us in June at Watford FC to talk about his inspirational career. Derek was the perfect person to help launch our first Beyond Boundaries event where we strive to unlock potential and push past the limits, we thought were unbreakable. His true legacy lies in the grit and determination he displayed during one of the most memorable moments in Olympic history. Our guests commented they left the event feeling inspired and motivated.

On 12 September, we have another speaker event at Mercer & Hole’s offices in London, with Colin MacClachlan of SAS Who Dares Wins fame, where he will share his unique perspective on resilience in the face of adversity from his time in the SAS. If you would like to attend a Mercer & Hole event throughout the year please contact  our Events Manager, Natalie Clare, natalie.clare@mercerhole.co.uk

Empowering internal team innovation

The campaign emphasises the parallels between sports, creativity, and business, highlighting the importance of teamwork, strategy, discipline, and goal setting in achieving success. By embracing new, sometimes daunting challenges and expanding one’s horizons, individuals can unlock their full potential and make a positive impact in both their personal and professional lives. From a masterclass on chess, a beginners’ running course, a dance class and gardening through to a workshop on networking and presentation training; members of the firm have enthusiastically run and attended a plethora of interesting events and workshops. This has not only helped our people embrace new skills and perhaps challenge themselves out of their comfort zone but has also directly translated to how we work with you, our clients.

Inspiring Icons

We asked our team who their inspiring icons were, those who helped shape their careers or their lives. See below to discover what some of our team members had to say.

“Dame Deborah James for squeezing every possible ounce of positivity out of the situation life dealt her and her dedication to breaking down perceptions to improve the lives and chances of others.”

Mark Baxter

“Cristiano Ronaldo is one for me that fits into the ‘unlocking your potential’ theme. Which may be cliché, but… Derided as a bit of a one-trick show pony who had no end product when he was first coming through at United, he’s become one of the best footballers, and greatest goal scorer, in history through total dedication to his craft, and sacrifice of anything that detracts from that. The element of that that I admire is that he isn’t as naturally talented as some other footballers, but he’s totally maximise his potential – and more! – through hard work / determination”.

Andrew Dean

“The person who has inspired me from the outset,  and still keeps me driving forth, is my Mum.  She sacrificed building a career to raise my brother and me. She worked nights for the NHS in an auxiliary role while we were young, and it was only after we were both at university that she herself graduated and flew up the grades to be the anaesthetists’ second in command. For me, there has never been a question that I couldn’t achieve my goals if I followed the work ethic instilled in me by my mum, with dedication and focus you open your own doors and present as someone who can and strives to make a difference. My future was in my hands and its hard work and commitment that would give me the privilege of making my own choices in life and not settling for ‘just a job’.”

Jo Upshall

“Michelle Obama – despite her success she comes across as very humble and hasn’t forgotten where she comes from. She has worked hard to get to where she is today, and this reflects my own work ethic. I have worked extremely hard to get to where I am today and have not had things handed to me!”.

Balbor Sundar

We can’t do this alone and want to engage and share with our Mercer & Hole community. Do you have an inspirational person you have looked up to throughout your life? Please share this with us.
