Audit Apprenticeship: Everything you need to know

1. What is the Audit Higher Apprenticeship Programme?

It’s a structured two‑year training programme where you work within the Audit team while studying towards the AAT Level 3 and 4 qualifications. You’ll gain hands‑on experience with real clients while developing technical and business skills.

3. What kind of work will I be doing?

You’ll support audits by analysing financial information, preparing accounts, testing controls, and learning how businesses operate. Your responsibilities increase as you gain skills and confidence.

4. What will I learn in Year 1 of the apprenticeship?

In your first year, you’ll learn to:

• Analyse bank payments and receipts
• Prepare control accounts
• Calculate prepayments, accruals, and depreciation
• Update fixed asset registers
• Draft basic financial statements
• Apply basic auditing principles
• Identify issues in client information and suggest solutions

5. What will I learn in Year 2?

In your second year, you’ll build on Year 1 and move into more advanced work, such as:

• Preparing full statutory accounts with correct disclosures
• Running small, simple audits independently
• Completing more complex audit testing
• Developing problem‑solving and commercial business skills
• Supporting junior trainees and acting as a buddy

6. Do I need previous accounting experience?

No. The programme is designed to train you from the ground up while you study for your AAT qualifications.

7. What qualifications will I gain?

You will study towards AAT Level 3 and Level 4.
After completing AAT, you’ll have the opportunity to apply to continue your training and study for the ACA qualification to become a chartered accountant.
