Charity Commission publishes Annual Report
The Charity Commission has published its latest Annual Report and Accounts. The report analyses its progress against its new strategic plan, which was published in January 2012 following a strategic review.
The new strategic plan was based on the key vision of “charities you can support with confidence”. It set out new priorities for the Commission: encouraging compliance and accountability, and strengthening charities’ self-reliance. The report will show how the regulator has started to implement the new strategy, for example by carrying out spot checks of charities’ annual accounts to ensure compliance, and by focusing on assessing and mitigating risks affecting the sector as a whole.
The Commission’s new partnership strategy is also outlined, which aims to improve the self-reliance of charities. This involves encouraging sector infrastructure organisations and charity advisors to take more responsibility for the good governance of the charities they work with.
The report also highlights the Commission’s success in moving its services online. In the past year, 99.9% of registrations have been carried out online, and all charities have been required to submit their Annual Returns electronically.
The report also measures the Commission’s performance against the key performance indicators identified in its previous strategic plan, and sets out how performance will be measured until 2015.
The report also sheds light on the work of the Commission’s International Programme, which helps the creation of accountable and independent non-governmental sectors all over the world, as well as to aid the establishment of regulation to minimise the risk of fraud and abuse. The Commission reports on projects currently underway in South Africa, Pakistan and Indonesia.
