HMRC’s investigations backlog
Recent press reports have highlighted how far behind HMRC is in sorting out their avoidance investigations – currently it appears to be a backlog of 41,000!
The National Audit Office’s report, Tax Avoidance: tackling marketed avoidance schemes, which looked at the effectiveness of the scheme that the Government introduced in 2004 indicated just over £10 billion at risk.
It appears that more than 100 schemes have been disclosed to HMRC but not followed up.
