A Guide for Individuals
We have no typical client, our clients range from young, high earning professionals looking to establish long term saving plans, through to retired individuals looking to make what they have work as hard as possible or pass on assets to the next generation.
Each client has their own reasons for wanting to engage a financial adviser. These might include:
- Wanting to plan for retirement
- Not knowing how, when or where to invest
- Being keen to reduce tax
- Concerned about trying to maintain a current standard of living in old age
- Wishing to pass wealth on efficiently to future generations
- Planning to provide for the cost of long-term care
- Saving to cover the cost of school or university fees
- Maximising business profits, or extract value from their business in a tax-efficient way
- Knowing they need to establish a long term financial plan, but either don’t know where to start or are unable to stick to it
- Interested in protecting their family against catastrophe (e.g. death or serious illness).
Investment Philosophy
M&H Financial Planning’s investment philosophy is built around a strategic approach to portfolio construction, based on modern portfolio theory. Our core belief is that by placing your capital at risk within an investment, you are owed a return over the long term. The more risk you take, then the higher the expected return should be.
We therefore see our role as making sure that you are in the right mix of assets to match either the level of return you need to achieve, or the amount of risk you are willing to tolerate; and to ensure that you capture the returns from investment markets as efficiently as possible.
Unlike many other investment advisers, we do not believe in chasing investment returns by trying to pick the ‘next big thing’, be it a particular fund manager or investment sector, or to time when markets will turn. There is a large body of research to suggest that it is impossible to do so on a consistent year-on-year basis, and the transaction costs involved can have a detrimental effect on returns.
Instead, we have put together a range of risk-graded portfolios designed to match clients’ varying levels of risk tolerance. These portfolios are highly diversified across global markets and are optimised to maximise returns for a given level of risk. Where possible we have sought out low-cost investment solutions in order to capture as much of the market’s returns as possible.
Our investment portfolios are designed to be held for the long term as part of a structured financial planning process, and we believe that this approach will complement a disciplined approach to saving.
Investment Process
The M&H Financial Planning investment process is overseen by our Investment Committee, and based on detailed analysis of the long term risks and returns of a wide range of global investment markets. Our committee reviews both the mix of assets and the underlying funds within the portfolios each quarter, with any alterations being applied to your investments at your annual review.
