Mercer & Hole take part in Debenhams Ottaway Cricket Tournament

A team from Mercer & Hole took part in a match against Debenhams Ottaway Solicitors, which was the first time both teams met at an idyllic cricket ground in the village of Kings Langley.

It was a lovely summers evening and Mercer & Hole went into bat. Our leading opener, Peter Godfrey Evans was due to start but unfortunately was delayed with kit issues, so he was pushed down the pecking order. However, in stepped Jack Reyland who displayed a fine 25 runs not out before retiring. Other notably batting appearances were from Gary Farnes who in his last game for the firm was 25 unbeaten and retired, along with another fine display from Peter Godfrey Evans who capped 25 not out (thankfully the kit issues was resolved in time). Chris Dennell our all rounder, contributed 20 and there were batting displays from Simon Coggins and Chris Geaney. Debenhams Ottaway were missing some players and had to draft in a few ringers, Mercer & Hole were a couple of players short and in stepped Caroline Stark and her cricket girls who displayed great co ordination in batting and bowling. Caroline who had never played cricket before unlike her children managed to get some useful tips from them before taking the long walk to the crease. She managed a sterling unbeaten – 1 run and Mercer & Hole finished on 129 for 6 wickets which was an admirable score.

The target was set and Debenhams Ottaway required a run rate of 6.5 per over from 20 overs to win. Mercer & Hole started brightly with some notable wickets from Gary Farnes, Simon Coggins and  Chris Dennell, along with a clean bowl from Caroline Stark’s girls. However, Debenhams Ottaway saved their best batters to last and with 2 runs required off the last over it was always going to be tough for Mercer & Hole. They finished on 132 for 6 with 5 balls left. Congratulations to Debenhams Ottaway on a closely fought match. Both sides then retired for well earned beer and splendid buffet at Kings Langley cricket club to discuss the performances of individuals in the cricket arena.

Mercer & Hole would like to thank Debenhams Ottaway for a well organised event.
