New tax penalties started on 1 April 2010

Exactly 156 years ago from 1 April 'Hard Times' was first serialised; 21 years ago the Poll Tax was introduced in Scotland and continuing a theme, just a reminder that as of 1 April this year HMRC’s compliance regime, involving the penalty for failure to notify, inaccuracy penalty and compliance checks legislation, was extended to cover most taxes and duties.

The changes include the following three key areas:

  • Failure to notify
  • Inaccurate returns
  • Compliance checks
