VAT Registrations. Businesses have been experiencing very lengthy delays in obtaining a VAT number.
As my colleague reported in August, businesses have been experiencing very lengthy delays in obtaining a VAT number. This was due to a backlog of applications with HMRC, due in part to increased checks to try and eliminate “carousel fraud”.
Our recent experience is that things appear to be getting better. The Revenue has reorganised the units which deal with applications and this seems to have helped. We can report that one of our clients who applied for VAT registration online received a VAT number within 3 weeks. This is very good news indeed!
It seems that applying for registration online definitely speeds matters up and also ensuring that any documentary evidence (e.g. intention to trade) needed is sent to HMRC with the application. That said, there is still room for improvement and patience may still be required!
